Exotic Animal Medicine

At Vickery Place Animal Hospital we welcome all small mammals as patients!

Often referred to as “pocket pets”, these small exotic creatures such as ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rats have distinctive physiological and behavioral traits that set them apart from dogs and cats. Their diet, housing, and healthcare needs are quite unique. Our veterinarians possess knowledge of the unique anatomy, physiology, and dietary requirements of these exotic animals. While most exotic pets do not require yearly vaccinations, routine examinations to ensure good dental health, discuss appropriate diet and housing and parasite control are essential for their well-being.

Ferrets are the exception to the above rule. They require vaccination against Canine Distemper Virus and Rabies Virus. They are also subject to flea infestation and Heartworm Disease. Vickery Place Animal Hospital recommends yearly examinations to provide preventative care such as Heartworm Prevention, parasite control and vaccination and we also assess common ferret specific conditions such as Insulinoma, Adrenal Disease, and certain cancers, to name a few.
